# The Brazilian Série A table in English: how to read the 2026 standings

Twenty clubs, 38 rounds, four relegation places and a cluster of continental spots at the top. Brazil's league table tells a great story once you know how to read it. Here is the format, in plain English.

## The format

The Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, the Brasileirão, is a straight double round-robin: every club plays every other club home and away, 38 matches each, usually from late March to early December. A win is worth 3 points, a draw 1. There are no playoffs: the club with the most points after round 38 is champion.

## The zones, top to bottom

- **The title and continental spots:** the top of the table qualifies for South America's continental competitions in the following season. The exact cutoffs shift slightly each year, depending on who wins the domestic cup and the continental titles.
- **Mid-table:** comfortable, until it is not. Three bad rounds can drag a mid-table side into the relegation conversation.
- **The relegation zone (17th to 20th), known as the Z4:** the bottom four at the end of round 38 drop to Série B. Brazilian fans track this zone as obsessively as the title race.

## Tiebreakers

Clubs level on points are separated, in order, by criteria such as number of wins, goal difference and goals scored, followed by head-to-head and disciplinary records. Goal difference decides relegation more often than you would think, which is why a heavy defeat in April can hurt in December.
