That single rule separates La Liga from the Premier League and the Bundesliga, and it has decided titles. Three points for a win, one for a draw, and the title goes to whoever has most after the final round. The **bottom three drop to the Segunda División**, with no play-off and no second chance. Spain takes a short winter break in early January, far shorter than Germany's, and spreads fixtures across the whole weekend from Friday to Monday. There is top-flight football on essentially every day of a normal weekend. ## Five Champions League places in 2026/27 Like England, Spain has **five** Champions League places this season. Four are automatic, first through fourth, and the fifth came from the **European Performance Spot**, UEFA's bonus for the two associations whose clubs collected the most points in Europe the previous season. Spain and England finished as the top two for 2025/26. Below that sit the Europa League and Conference League places, which shift depending on who wins the Copa del Rey. Two clubs level on points are separated first by **head-to-head**, not goal difference. The full order: 1. **Head-to-head points** between the tied clubs. 1. **Head-to-head goal difference.** 1. **Overall goal difference** across the season. 1. **Goals scored.** 1. **Fair-play points.** 1. **A match at a neutral venue**, as a last resort. **The criterion almost nobody knows:** La Liga uses *fair-play points* before it resorts to an extra match. Cards accumulated across ten months can, in theory, separate two clubs level on everything else. It is vanishingly rare to be invoked, but it is in the rules, and it does not exist in the Premier League. The practical consequence is the mirror image of England: in Spain, winning both meetings with a direct rival is an insurance policy.
