Copa Libertadores 2026: format, tiebreakers and how to follow
Updated 7 August 2026
The Libertadores changed one important rule for 2026, and it decides who goes through. This guide covers the full format, the new tiebreaker that promoted head-to-head above goal difference, Brazil's seven berths and how to follow every matchday live.
The format on one screen
The group stage has 32 clubs in 8 groups of 4, playing home and away within their group. Twenty-eight enter directly through their national berths; the other four arrive from the third qualifying round, the funnel that eliminates dozens of clubs before the main competition starts.
The top two in each group reach the round of 16. The third-placed team does not go home: it drops into the Sudamericana playoffs and can still reach that competition's round of 16. From the round of 16 onwards everything is two-legged knockout football, until the decider. The 2026 final is a single match at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo on 28 November.
| Round | Format | Who advances |
|---|---|---|
| Qualifying (rounds 1 to 3) | Two-legged knockout | 4 clubs reach the group stage |
| Group stage | 8 groups of 4, home and away | 1st and 2nd to the round of 16; 3rd to the Sudamericana playoffs |
| Round of 16, quarters, semis | Two-legged knockout | Winner on aggregate |
| Final | Single match | Champion of South America |
The 2026 change: head-to-head is now the first tiebreaker
This is the change that most alters how you read a group, and the one most published tables still describe incorrectly. Until 2025, two teams level on points were separated by overall goal difference. From 2026 the first criterion is head-to-head.
The order is now:
- Head-to-head points between the tied teams.
- Head-to-head goal difference.
- Head-to-head goals scored.
- Overall goal difference across all group matches.
Why it matters in practice: thrashing the weakest side in the group is worth less than it used to be. That result used to inflate overall goal difference and could decide qualification. Now what decides it is what you did against the specific rival you are level with. Winning both head-to-head matches outranks any goal difference built elsewhere.
The same change applies to the Sudamericana group stage, so any qualification scenario worked out with the old rule is worth redoing.
Brazil's seven berths
Brazil has seven Libertadores places, and how they are allocated changed this season. Five come from the Brasileirao and two from the Copa do Brasil, which from 2026 also qualifies its runner-up.
| Source | Who | Enters at |
|---|---|---|
| Brasileirao | 1st to 4th | Group stage |
| Brasileirao | 5th | Qualifying round |
| Copa do Brasil | Winner | Group stage |
| Copa do Brasil | Runner-up | Qualifying round |
One clause catches people out. If the Copa do Brasil winner also finishes in the Brasileirao top four, it is already qualified through the league. In that case the Copa do Brasil runner-up moves up into the group stage, and the qualifying place passes to the best-placed league team not yet qualified. That is why the berth maths only settles after the Copa do Brasil final, not on the last league matchday. The Serie A table guide explains each zone.
How to follow the Libertadores on iPhone
Continental football has a scheduling problem domestic leagues do not: matches across four time zones, on weeknights, almost always in the evening. Missing kick-off is the default rather than the exception.
In KickFlow the Libertadores sits in the same competition switcher as the Brasileirao. You get each group's table, the live score with a timeline of events (goals, cards, substitutions and VAR decisions) and the bracket from the round of 16 onwards. Kick-off times are always converted to your own time zone, with no mental arithmetic.
The setup that pays off on a midweek night
- Follow every club you care about in the competition, not only your own.
- Turn on the kick-off alert as well as the goal alert. In continental football the time is what slips.
- Leave Live Activities on, so the score sits on your Lock Screen while you do something else.
The full walkthrough is in the goal notifications guide.
