The format, and the second-place trap
The group stage has 32 teams in 8 groups of 4, playing home and away. In 2026 it ran from 7 April to 28 May. So far it reads like a smaller Libertadores. The difference shows up at qualification time.
Only the group winner goes straight to the round of 16. That is eight direct places, one per group. The runner-up is not eliminated, but is not through either: it drops into the playoffs, an extra two-legged knockout round.
The part that confuses everyone: the runner-up's playoff opponent does not come from the Sudamericana. It comes from the Libertadores, from the eight third-placed teams in that competition's group stage. A club that had a decent Sudamericana campaign has to get past a side that was playing Libertadores football weeks earlier.

From the round of 16 the shape is conventional: two-legged knockout ties through to the final, with the champion taking a place in the following season's Libertadores. It is the shortest route between a modest domestic campaign and the continent's biggest competition.
The tiebreaker changed in 2026
CONMEBOL changed the rule in both competitions at once. In the group stage the first tiebreaker is no longer overall goal difference but head-to-head. The order is head-to-head points, head-to-head goal difference, head-to-head goals scored, and only then overall goal difference.
In a competition where first versus second in the group is the difference between the round of 16 and having to beat a Libertadores club, that detail is worth a season. And it changes the maths: thrashing the weakest side in the group no longer compensates for losing the head-to-head. How Brazilian clubs qualify
Brazil's Sudamericana places come from the Brasileirao, in the positions immediately below the last one that grants a Libertadores berth. Because winners of other competitions can qualify through two routes at once, the exact band moves every year, but in practice finishing between 7th and 12th usually earns a place.
